Compare Dental Insurance
It really pays to shop around and compare dental insurance so you get the price and the features that fit your lifestyle.
The old saying, “you get what you pay for” really applies here because if you sign up for the wrong plan you could find the coverage inadequate for major dental procedures. That means you have to pay more out of your own pocket. Remember, if a plan is really cheap, there’s probably a reason!
Many employees have company dental plans that cover their basic needs – and those of their spouse and children – up to about $1,000 a year, with the employer picking up most or all of the cost of “basic” procedures like cleaning and checkups and fillings. These plans typically cover about 80% of the bill of routine dental work.
For more complex procedures like crowns and root canals, coverage is often limited to 50%.
Some company dental plans also have limited orthodontic coverage (for example, a $500-$1,000 lifetime limit). Though mostly aimed at children, even adult teeth sometimes need a little straightening out!
Most company dental plans do not cover implants. Learn more at implant dental insurance.
Sometimes both spouses have plans so its obviously wise to carefully compare benefits and make claims under the most generous plan.
You can also purchase additional personal dental insurance if you feel your work plan is inadequate for your needs. Some workers have had no choice but to do this as health and dental benefits are often cut by employers during tough economic times.
Ask your dentist about the insurance companies he or she works with – there’s nothing like a little insider information! Also ask family and friends if they can recommend an insurance company. Click here to get a free online quote.
